Stocks Break Weekly See-Saw Trend

S&P 500 Sets 70th Record High U.S. equity averages returned to gains again last week as investors cheered indications that omicron infections may be peaking in early-hit nations. Equity appetites increased for its first back-to-back weekly gains in December after South Africa lifted its overnight curfew restrictions and went to the lowest of its five-stage COVID-19 alert levels. Meanwhile, the U.S. cut its isolation guidelines for those testing COVID-19 positive to five days from 10. On Wednesday of the final week of the year, the S&P 500 notched its 70th all-time closing high for the year, albeit ending Friday around half of 1% below the record.
